Finding the biological signature of long COVID

A small subset of people who’ve contracted COVID-19 experience debilitating symptoms that just won’t go away. Statistics Canada estimates as many as 15 per cent of Canadians suffer from long COVID, which experts worry could become a “mass-disabling event.” In a recent study in the journal Nature, scientists from the U.S. identified clear immunological and hormonal signatures in long COVID patients. Akiko Iwasaki, an immunobiologist from Yale University School of Medicine, says she hopes this will lead to better diagnosis and treatments for long COVID patients.
