Jamie xx Live in Concert
DJ, producer, musician and all-around music aficionado Jamie xx played an exhilarating, genre-melding set that fuelled the dance floor with banger after banger. The English artist’s tour for his sophomore album, In Waves, included two incredible, sold-out nights at Toronto’s History, and he opened the second show with F.U., a song with a driving techno beat and an ad lib of Erykah Badu, setting the tone for an adventurous night. Throughout the two-hour set, Jamie xx played most of his songs from the new album while blending in whatever delectable house, disco and techno sounds he has discovered either through his obsessive listening or crate-digging expeditions. He also gave a nod to his longtime collaborators — and fellow the xx bandmates — Romy and Oliver Sim with Waited All Night. The crowd cheered, swayed and sang as Loud Places flowed out of the speakers and as the song built, the lights that had been pulsing and flickering all night turned to reveal a massive disco ball that showered the audience in flecks of fairydust-like light. Jamie xx wrapped the show with his massive collaboration Life, featuring pop artist Robyn, followed by his bouncy disco/house track Baddy on the Floor, featuring American DJ Honey Dijon. When the show wrapped, the notoriously quiet artist casually waved, showing his gratitude to the crowd before taking his exit.
