2 men in Amherst charged in $290K stolen cheque fraud
Police allege two cheques were stolen from business and then deposited at financial institution

Two men have been charged with fraud in Amherst, N.S., for what police allege is a stolen cheque scheme that amounted to roughly $290,000.
The men, 36 and 45, were arrested earlier this week and held in custody for a bail hearing Friday in provincial court. They are charged with fraud over $5,000 and possession of property obtained by crime.
One of the accused was released on a number of conditions, including that he must hand his passport in to police, and that he and his surety pledge $10,000 each to secure his bail. The second man is being held for court on Monday.
Amherst Police Department Insp. Tom Wood said the allegations involve two cheques stolen from a business. They were cashed late last year at a financial institution, which contacted police earlier this month after picking up “discrepancies,” he said.
“A lot of times what happens is the banks will talk to other banks as cheques or whatnot get transferred from one financial institution to the other,” he said.
“They do have their own policies and procedures to be able to detect sorts of anomalies of fraud.”
In court, prosecutor Andy Melvin said the case is still under investigation and "there is a lot of information coming in quickly."
