Man, 33, killed after being shot by police in Brantford, Ont., says SIU

A 33-year-old man has died after being shot by police in Brantford, Ont., Friday morning, the province's police watchdog says.

The shooting occurred at a residence on Palomino Drive, where police were responding to a "disturbance" involving a man and a woman, said Kristy Denette, a spokesperson for the Special Investigations Unit (SIU).

“One male was shot [by] police and pronounced deceased at the scene," Denette wrote in an email to CBC Hamilton. "A woman was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.”

A "sharp-edged weapon" was also recovered at the scene, the SIU said.

Brantford police said in a news release that the woman was injured during the dispute involving the man.

As the SIU has invoked its mandate, "Brantford Police Service will be unable to provide further information or comment related to the incident," reads the release.

Officers negotiated with man, says SIU

In a separate news release Friday afternoon, the SIU said police were called to the home at approximately 2:30 a.m.

Emergency Response Team officers arrived and negotiated with the male, the release said, adding that, after a time, police entered the residence and three officers fired shots.

The release said a post-mortem is scheduled for Sunday.

Four investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to the case, the SIU said.

The SIU investigates cases of serious injury, death and allegations of sexual assault involving police, as well as cases where police discharge firearms at people.
