What's happening New Year's Eve and what's open and closed New Year's Day

A new year is officially upon us, and as we welcome 2026, it's not quite business as usual. Some businesses will be closed or operating on different schedules on both New Year's Eve, and New Year's Day.

Things to do on New Year's Eve...

The annual New Year's Eve in Victoria Park begins at 7 p.m., with kids' performers, free hot chocolate and an early countdown and fireworks at 8 p.m.

Starting at 8:30 p.m., the more grown-up party begins, with food trucks, live performances from local artists, and a second firework display at midnight.

Venues across the city, including places such 100 Kellogg Lane, are planning New Year's Eve celebrations as well.

London Transit service is free from 8 p.m. until the end of service on New Year's Eve, with hours extended to make sure people get home safe after midnight.

...and New Year's Day

The city has a bunch of free recreation activities at community centres throughout London, including family yoga, arts and crafts, badminton, zumba and roller skating.

What's open and closed New Year's Day

Shopping:

Masonville Place and White Oaks Mall will both be closed on New Year's Day. 

Most major grocery story chains will be closed on New Year's Day. 

It might be wise to make any deposits or withdrawals done before Thursday. All of the major banks are closed on New Year's Day. 

Alcohol: 

LCBO locations will be closed on the holiday. Most Beer Store outlets will be closed as well. Some Wine Rack locations are open. 

Transit: 

The London Transit Commission is running on a holiday schedule on Jan 1. Holiday schedules are available on the Routes & Schedules page. The downtown ticket office is closed on New Year's day. Track your route in real time here.

City and government services:

Garbage collection is cancelled on New Year's Day. Regular collection shifts by one day, meaning if you're expecting your garbage to be picked up on Jan. 1, plan for Jan. 2, instead.

It's the same for Jan. 2. If your garbage would normally be picked up on Jan. 2, it'll be collected on Jan. 3, instead.
